Kingpins Stories: Amy Wang-The Limitless Possibilities of Denim
When I was a teenager, I was deeply attracted by the ever-changing beautiful world of fashion. But my parents were engineers and it was their influence that made me want to be an engineer, as well. So when I had the chance to choose my major in university, I combined my passion for fashion and my love for engineering and studied textile engineering.
It was a rigorous and complete education in fabric formation, chemicals, textile machinery, colors and every aspect of textile production. I also loved my classes in fashion research that again made me want to combine factory knowledge with the world of fashion. It was this combined love and lots of hard work that enabled me to graduate with first honors in textile engineering.
JOINING THE JOB MARKET
After graduation in 1993, I interviewed at Advance Denim. At that time, Guangdong was the fastest-growing coastal province in China and Shunde was one of the fastest-growing cities within Guangdong. There were countless opportunities for young graduates of textile universities but I was so impressed with Advance Denim that it was the only job interview I attended. I was lucky enough to join the company — and I am proud to say that it is the only company that I have worked at and it is where my long journey with denim began.
I still vividly remember the day I went for my interview like it was yesterday. I was so genuinely captivated by the overall company culture and specifically the harmony of the workers and the impressive chairman. It was also very important to me that Advance Denim was the first denim mill to be established in China and was a dynamic, inclusive and innovative company with many opportunities to learn and grow as an employee.
DIVING INTO DENIM
After joining the team I started on the mill floor as a machine operator and a maintenance worker. I worked my way up to become a technician, craftsman, supervisor, then factory manager and director of R&D. During these years of hard work and training, I steadily learned that denim is a special fabric that not only has character and soul but limitless possibilities. I also learned that, even though we should respect the beauty and history of vintage denim, there are also opportunities to create denim that is more innovative and sustainable.
I am a very persistent person and I enjoy a challenge. I believe that no matter what your job is, you should strive to do your best. There have always been challenges and difficulties on my career journey — from school to the denim production floor, from a beautiful learning environment to the night shift at the factory. It was difficult for a young female graduate to adapt, but I always believed in what I was doing and loved the fact that I was learning a real craft.
In order to be an expert at your craft, you must devote yourself to learn every single element in the manufacturing process. It is hands-on experience, training and learning over a long period of time that makes you an expert. I embraced the challenges and training that were offered to me and that effort was recognized by the company. I also established a strong bond with my coworkers and supervisors as we faced these challenges together.
THE SALES CHALLENGE
In 2009, I was appointed to take on a new challenge with the company: Sales and Marketing. This was an even greater challenge given that the global financial crisis was affecting sales negatively and there were very few orders. Since I did not have any sales experience, my strategy was to learn as much as I could and work harder than anyone else.
In my previous responsibilities, I did not have to deal with people outside our manufacturing teams, so I found the outgoing nature of sales difficult and I started out very nervous and shy. I was also used to getting results right away in the mill. But within the first three months of hard work in sales, I saw little results and started to doubt if I could master this latest challenge.
However, I never gave up and my persistence started to pay off in the fourth month and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. It was truly a team effort and I was fortunate that my team was very united and supportive. Together, we developed many new products according to the needs of different markets and specific customers, using the newest innovations in fiber, dyeing and finishing. These efforts were ultimately recognized and validated by our customers and generated an extremely positive growth in overall sales.
NEXT STEP: EXPANSION
As a result of my hard-won sales success, I was promoted to General Manager by the board of directors in 2012.
After laying a solid foundation in the domestic market in China, it was time for a new challenge and we decided to expand our sales internationally. Since Hong Kong is an international hub for garments and textiles, it was our first stop to look for international business opportunities. It seemed that yet again I and my team were starting from scratch in an unknown market — it was daunting to say the least.
I implemented the same strategy of determination, teamwork and striving to be the best while being customer-focused to meet the challenges of international expansion. In time, we successfully set up export offices in Hong Kong, Amsterdam and New York to meet the different demands of each region. We also have participated in many international trade shows. The name Advance Denim is now well known by renowned global brands as a leader in innovation, quality and sustainability.
Driven by continuous self-improvement and customer support, we have maintained double-digit growth year-over-year. More important than the growth is our improvement in green manufacturing, employee welfare and enterprise scale. I am also extremely proud that Advance Denim has become one of only two mills in China to be a certified “The Green Mill” and the only denim mill in China that is a certified “Role Model of Printing and Dyeing Company.”
They say that when you find a job that you love you never work a day in your life. I love my job and I don’t find it tiring but endlessly exciting and fun. My greatest joy is seeing my team have breakthroughs and success with customers after working hard to gain their confidence and recognition. It is at these points that I see the growing confidence and joy in their work that make me realize that they enjoy work and life as much as I do. I am happiest when I can be a role model for their joy and, at the same time, be inspired by their hard work and dedication.
I must say also that I am lucky to have a family that supports me and I am grateful for their encouragement and understanding. I live together with my parents and my husband’s parents in the same house and I love cooking so much that I will cook for the whole family during the holidays and birthdays. My favorite part of the day is my evening walk with my husband when we discuss the day’s events. My daughter is currently at University, but we talk on the phone every day and are very close friends. I think it is important to put your family and friends in your heart, they will feel that love and support and give it back to you unconditionally. My family is, without a doubt, my motivation to move forward and continue my denim journey and it would not be possible without their support.

Most sustainable fabric: The newest eco-friendly style is composed of 70 percent recycled cotton and 30 percent Refibra-all packaged in one durable fabric. It is remarkable to have such a high content of recycled fibers and still exceed strength requirements, but our most sustainable fabric combines a mixture of new innovations. Our botanic dye collection, which uses Bigbox dyeing technology, is a clean natural dyeing solution that uses 94 percent less water than conventional dye methods. Botanic dyes are extracted from natural roots, stems, leaves and fruits. Cleaner natural dyes and sustainable, low water dyeing is just the start. Then we add sustainable fibers such as recycled cotton, Refibra and cottonized hemp.
Most versatile fabric: Freecross is Advance Denim's cutting-edge bi-stretch technology that will change the way you feel about bi-stretch. In comparison to traditional bi-stretch, it has a super soft hand and clean bright wash down. It also has a balanced stretch in both the warp and the fill that is created by low shrinkage in both directions. Low shrinkage not only makes it easy to manufacture but it gives the appearance of vintage non-stretch denim. This stretch technology mixed with both recycled polyester and recycled cotton in a durable 12.3 oz. weight is a versatile mix of both sustainability, comfort and performance.
On fashion trends: It is an exciting time in fashion and a great deal of trends are fighting for attention. The importance of texture and constructions that nod to the late '90s and early 2000s are celebrated in our Y2K line. Enhanced crosshatch looks and multicount warps in comfort stretch constructions were the foundation of denim in Y2K and Advance has updated these looks with sustainable fibers and dyes. Advance is also expanding its range of coated fabrics that blend smooth leather-like stretch fabrics that don't crack with bright metallic shades that add a pop [of color], Color and texture will not only be evident on the face of the fabric but will be hidden on the back with printed multicolored fillings that add a layered wash down and a fun cuff.
On technology/investments: Advance Denim is continuing to take a deep look into all production methods to make sure that they are as sustainable as possible, and if they are not that we make the necessary improvements and upgrades. In some instances, we must totally change the traditional machinery as we did with Bigbox dyeing and revisit natural dyes. Our goal this season was to rid the dye process of the harmful chemical sodium hydrosulfite. This chemical has been used to reduce indigo since 1869 but it is highly flammable, toxic and polluting. After three years of development, we introduced BioBlue indigo, a clean and safe indigo reduction system that does not increase your carbon footprint while producing high quality, deep dark true indigo dye.
On raw material costs: Rising costs are problematic in every part of our economy right now, and denim production is certainly not immune. Cotton is the lion share of costs in denim and its price has skyrocketed in the past year and shows no signs of retreating soon. Historically when cotton prices have spiked producers have introduced lower-priced fibers but prices of all raw materials have spiked so there is no safe haven. Advance Denim is working closely with its customers to try and market time purchases to mitigate the impact of these inflationary raw materials. Advance Denim is continuing to produce the high quality, innovative denim that our customers have grown to love, and we feel that our F/W 23-24 line will be focused on market right fashion.

ADVANCE DENIM ESTABLISHES 10-YEAR CARBON REDUCTION PLAN
Established in 1987, Advance Denim Limited is using its experience and history to create styles that honor true vintage denim, while also taking the fabric’s manufacturing methods forward. In this spirit of continuous improvement, the China-based denim mill has outlined a 10-year carbon reduction plan designed to continue lowering its carbon footprint year over year.
Over the past five years, Advance Denim has become an innovator in sustainable manufacturing, first launching the Bigbox dyeing process, which is designed to save 95 percent of the water needed to dye aniline-free liquid indigo. Shortly after, the denim mill took another responsible step by debuting an alternative eco-friendly dyeing method, BioBlue indigo, an innovation aimed at replacing the harsh chemical sodium hydrosulfite in the indigo dye process for a cleaner, safe dye.
The changes haven’t stopped there. In 2020, Advance replaced a coal boiler in its 120,000-square-meter facility in Shunde, China, with a clean-burning natural gas boiler. One year later, the denim producer also replaced the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used in the jean-singeing process to clean, natural gas.
In 2021, the manufacturer installed the first phase of a new photovoltaic solar generation system, which is expected to generate 3,000 kWh per day and will account for 5 percent of the business’s total energy consumption.
Advance Denim is also replacing the refrigerant in all air conditioning systems, instead using R32, a refrigerant specifically produced to use less energy and prevent ozone depletion, thus further lowering the company’s carbon footprint. In accordance with this plan, all company vehicles are being switched to renewable fuels such as ethanol. To further reduce water usage and wastewater, Advance Denim will extend the Bigbox dyeing capacity across its entire operation.
“There is a lot of hard work and capital investment in lowering our carbon footprint year after year,” said Amy Wang, managing director, Advance Denim. “The innovations are not always visible to a person touring a factory and certainly have an effect on the cost, but we feel that it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to make denim one of the world’s most environmentally friendly fabrics. We are also working with our industry partners as a founding member of the zero-carbon initiative in China to build a supply chain that practices low carbon production as a whole. Advance will lead by example and help create a cleaner industry and environment for future generations.”
While Advance Denim has embraced the many sustainability efforts gaining traction in fashion, it couldn’t accomplish its goals without collaborating with other parties. The manufacturer has joined numerous programs and coalitions to develop and follow through on carbon reduction plans.
Advance is one of the founding participants of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign project, a member of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as part of its progress towards supply chain transparency goals.
The mill also partners with global sustainable services and programs such as ISO, Bluesign, Cotton Leads, ZDHC and Oeko-Tex to certify its manufacturing facilities, both in China and in Vietnam. Thus far, the firm’s production processes are certified for the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), Organic Content Standard (GRS) and the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS). Advance Denim has also been a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition since 2016 and received a third-party verified HIGG score of 88 in 2020, well ahead of the industry standard score of 57.3.
With the support of partners that are committed to improving the sustainability of its manufacturing operations, Advance Denim is even more encouraged that it can achieve and exceed its 10-year carbon reduction goals.

When creativity merges with technological innovation
A new era is born in the world of denim, Advance Denim and Italian denim specialist Paolo Gnutti are set to combine their skills to create Advance Denim by Paolo Gnutti, a selection of special fabric capsule collection aimed at the US and Asian markets.
This collaboration will combine Paolo Gnutti’s artistry and Advance denim’s technological innovation to create “magical” inspiration that are with the reach of all brands.
Gnutti, who has been dedicated to denim innovation and creativity for his whole career, is expert in reinventing indigo bases by completely transforming them thanks to the use of flocks, 3-D prints, colored foils and metallic effects while adding funky touches of fashion-driven ideas to denim.
Gnutti explained how he developed this collection: “For this collaboration I selected a series of specific cotton and yarn types with high quality characteristics as my aim is to develop high quality products at superior price-quality ratio, though meant to reach different customers, from premium to the mass market.” And continues: “I liked to mix different inspirations in this collection – just like in “fusion” cuisine – mixing different aesthetics and fashion elements with research and quality.”
“We are looking forward to Paolo bringing his Italian artistic aesthetics to our denim,” commented Amy Wang, General Manager, Advance Denim. “We believe it is the combination of Eastern and Western design and culture that we have never offered to our customers before and will take Advance Denim to a whole new level.” added Wang.
